Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has defended his decision to work with President William Ruto, stating that the collaboration is aimed at addressing critical national issues, including the Social Health Authority (SHA) and the controversial Housing Levy.

Speaking at a funeral service in Kiambu County, Raila dismissed allegations that his move was politically motivated, insisting that his primary concern remains the welfare of Kenyans.Raila acknowledged the criticism surrounding his newfound cooperation with the president but clarified that President Ruto personally reached out to him to help stabilize the country.

He emphasized that the agreement they signed was not about political alignment ahead of the 2027 elections but rather a structured effort to tackle key economic and social challenges affecting citizens.“The president approached me, seeking my input in solving critical national issues. Our discussions focused on how to ease the burden on Kenyans, particularly concerning taxation and healthcare reforms. I could not ignore the opportunity to be part of the solution,” Raila stated.

His remarks come amid backlash from a section of his supporters who view his engagement with the government as a betrayal. However, Raila maintained that his core mission to fight for the rights of Kenyans remains unchanged.

He reassured the public that his collaboration with Ruto is based on concrete resolutions aimed at improving governance and service delivery.“I know some people are questioning my decision, but I would rather be at the table negotiating for the people than shouting from the sidelines,” Raila added.
