The Ministry of Water and Sanitation is exploring innovative ways to expand access to water and sanitation services, with a focus on Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) that bring tangible benefits to communities.
On Thursday, Principal Secretary Julius Korir, CBS, attended ongoing negotiations between the proponents of the Sabaki Carrier Water Project and the Ministry’s Technical Committee, which also includes officers from the National Treasury PPP Directorate and sector experts.
The discussions, a key stage in the PPP process, aim to align the technical, financial, and legal aspects of the project to ensure sustainability, value for money, and protection of the public interest.
The Sabaki Carrier Water Project plans to draw 80,000 cubic metres of water daily from the Athi River aquifer along the Sabaki River in Kilifi County.
The project will also develop a water treatment and storage plant, sewerage facilities, distribution networks, and the necessary piping systems to supply clean water to surrounding communities.
PS Korir highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to using alternative financing to complement public funds, accelerate delivery, and expand access to reliable water and sanitation services across the country.
