What began as a precautionary measure at one of Kenya’s most prestigious schools, Alliance High School, has garnered attention from the public after the administration ordered the closure of the school following unrest from the students.
Parents collecting their children due to safety concerns, police have arrested ten students suspected of setting fire to the mattress store. According to Board Management chairperson Sam Ncheeri, the students have been arrested and are aligned with the police for writing a statement. The arrest comes shortly after the school was closed definitely on the morning of Thursday.
In a communication to the parents, the Principal said, “We wish to reassure all parents that there is no cause for alarm. The students remain calm, safe and under the care and supervision of the school…and in the spirit of maintaining confidence, well-being and peace of mind of our entire school community.”
The closure and arrests have shocked many, as the school is often celebrated for producing good grades and leaders. Parents have expressed disbelief, while the education officials warned that indiscipline and peer pressure were eroding the values of institutions.
