The government has launched six refrigerated vehicles under the Post4Health Project to improve the delivery of essential medical products, including vaccines and insulin, to remote and underserved communities across Kenya.

Speaking during the launch, Cabinet Secretary in charge of the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy William Kabogo said the initiative would leverage the Postal Corporation of Kenya’s nationwide network to strengthen healthcare supply chains.

The vehicles are fitted with cold-chain storage facilities to maintain the required temperatures for sensitive medical products during transportation from loading points to health facilities.

The project originated from an initiative by the Universal Postal Union during the COVID-19 pandemic to support postal operators in transporting health products. Kenya’s application, submitted through Posta, was approved, with the Communications Authority of Kenya’s Universal Service Fund providing additional funding to complete the fleet.

The Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) also partnered with the institutions in implementing the initiative.

The government plans to integrate Posta’s distribution network with KEMSA and county health systems through shared data, storage, transportation and digital tracking of temperature and vehicle locations.

The initiative seeks to improve access to properly stored medicines and vaccines, particularly in remote areas, supporting Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage agenda and the constitutional right to quality healthcare.
