The National Police Service (NPS) has warned the public against participating in or organizing protests scheduled for today, when President William Ruto is expected to deliver the State of the Nation Address in Parliament.

NPS Spokesperson Dr. Resila Onyango in a statement said that the police had not received any formal notification from the protest organizers, as required by the Public Order Act.

The warning comes amid circulating social media reports about planned demonstrations, fueled by growing political unrest.

“Attention of the National Police Service (NPS) is drawn to information circulating on social media regarding planned protests on Thursday, November 21, 2024. NPS also recognizes the constitutional right of Kenyans to peacefully assemble, demonstrate, or present petitions to public offices,” Onyango’s statement read.

“However, the law requires that organizers notify the Regulating Officer (Officer Commanding Station) in writing at least three days but no more than fourteen days in advance, outlining the details of the planned event. This ensures that proper safety and security measures can be arranged for public demonstrations,” she added.

Onyango confirmed that no such notification had been received from any organizers.

She urged citizens to go about their daily routines without fear of disruption.

Ruto set to address the Parliament today afternoon.
