Police in Kadzandani, Mombasa, on Saturday arrested a woman linked to a suspected fraud involving over 1,500 cartons of milk, following a complaint by a local distributor.

The scam came to light after Agnes Waraba, a sales and marketing officer at Mayford Investment’s Mombasa depot, flagged suspicious bulk orders placed by a man identified as Geoffrey Gema Waweru. The orders, made between July 5 and 18, totalled KSh 1.8 million.

Waweru, posing as a genuine client, allegedly sent fake M-Pesa payment messages using an Airtel line.

The payment confirmations were later found to be edited and didn’t match the company’s official transaction records.

Acting on the report, Mayford staff and police arranged a final delivery of 150 cartons to Mtopanga on Saturday.

Officers trailed the delivery truck and arrested a woman, Susan Mawiya, as she received the goods.

She later led police to two single-room houses where 1,555 cartons of milk worth an estimated KSh 960,000 were recovered.

Police are tracing Waweru who is the main suspect, and suspect that others could have been involved in the fraud scheme. Investigations are in progress
