Detectives have dismantled an alleged phone theft and hacking racket operating under the guise of a mobile phone repair business in Kisii town.
The operation, conducted by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Kisii Central in collaboration with fraud investigators from Mogo Auto Ltd, led to the arrest of two suspects accused of stealing and unlawfully unlocking financed mobile devices.
The suspects, identified as Duncan Ontita Anyaga and Phares Nyagaka Luke, were arrested during a raid at a phone repair shop located at Market Plaza in Kisii town.
According to the DCI, detectives recovered more than 500 assorted mobile phones and motherboards from the premises. Among the recovered devices were several Mogo-financed Tecno KM4 handsets that had previously been reported missing.
Investigators allege that the phones had been stripped of their security locks and were being prepared for resale.
The two suspects remain in custody as detectives process them and finalise investigations ahead of their arraignment in court.
The DCI said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to disrupt networks involved in the theft, unlawful unlocking and resale of financed mobile phones.
