Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has commissioned the 150-bed Wanini Kireri Magereza Level IV Hospital at the Prisons Staff Training College in Ruiru, marking a major milestone in efforts to improve access to quality healthcare for correctional service officers, inmates and residents in the surrounding community.
The facility is among the latest government investments aimed at strengthening healthcare infrastructure and supporting the country’s Universal Health Coverage agenda.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Kindiki said the hospital demonstrates President William Ruto’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery through targeted investments in medical infrastructure, human resources and related services.
The hospital has been integrated with the Social Health Authority’s (SHA) Usalama Cover Public Officers Medical Scheme, which will provide comprehensive medical services to officers serving under the State Department for Correctional Services and their dependants.
The cover includes outpatient and inpatient services, maternity care, specialised treatment and emergency medical evacuation.
The Level IV facility is equipped with modern medical infrastructure, including an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), High Dependency Unit (HDU), Radiology Unit and Dental Unit.
It also has male and female wards, a maternity wing and a paediatric ward to cater for different healthcare needs.
The hospital will additionally provide specialised services, including dental and renal care, further reducing the need for patients to seek specialised treatment outside the facility.
Kindiki said the investment is part of the government’s broader healthcare reform programme focused on modernising health facilities and ensuring Kenyans have access to quality and affordable healthcare.
The commissioning comes as the government continues to implement reforms under the Universal Health Coverage programme, with increased focus on expanding healthcare infrastructure and strengthening access to essential and specialised medical services.
