Roadside improvement works along the busy corridor linking Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and James Gichuru Road Junction have entered an advanced stage, according to a fresh update by the State Department for Roads.

The department said pedestrian walkways and landscaping near the airport entry are nearing completion as part of a wider capacity enhancement and beautification programme along the JKIA–Westlands highway corridor.

According to the department, the project covers the stretch between the James Gichuru Road junction and JKIA, one of Nairobi’s busiest routes connecting the airport to the city centre and key commercial hubs.

Officials said the works are aimed at improving pedestrian safety, easing traffic flow and upgrading the visual appeal of the highway, which serves as a major gateway for visitors entering the country.

“The walkway construction and landscaping works are currently at an advanced stage, particularly near the JKIA entry,” the department said in an update, noting that the broader project includes capacity expansion, landscaping and beautification works.

The upgrades are expected to increase traffic capacity while providing safer pedestrian access along the highway, which has long been criticised for safety risks to non-motorised road users.

Once completed, the government says the corridor will meet modern urban infrastructure standards and enhance the travel experience for motorists and pedestrians alike, as Nairobi continues to expand infrastructure around key economic and transport hubs.
