Madaraka Day celebrations across parts of the Great Rift Valley were marked by strong calls for peace, security, and economic relief as leaders used the national holiday to address pressing local concerns.
In Nakuru County, County Commissioner Loyford Kibaara assured residents of heightened security following recent criminal activities in Nakuru town. He revealed that a manhunt is underway for a lone gunman and two accomplices who have been targeting businesses at night. “We are intensifying operations and we will not rest until the suspects are brought to justice,” Kibaara stated.
Kibaara also issued a stern warning to local administrators abetting the illicit brew trade, emphasizing that those found culpable would face serious consequences. His sentiments were echoed by leaders in Nyandarua County, where authorities reiterated their commitment to eradicating illegal alcohol, a persistent issue in parts of the region.
In Kajiado County, Governor Joseph Ole Lenku shifted focus to the high cost of electricity, announcing that his administration would invest in green energy solutions. “We must transition to sustainable energy sources to reduce the burden of high power bills on our people,” said Lenku, highlighting the county’s long-term development strategy.
Meanwhile, in West Pokot County, the fight against banditry took center stage. Local leaders assured residents that decisive action is being taken against those inciting violence and insecurity.
Authorities confirmed that two Kenya Police Reservists and a chief have already been indicted for allegedly aiding in the retrogressive practice of banditry.
In neighboring Bomet County, Acting County Commissioner Leonard Mgute called on residents living downstream to exercise caution amid ongoing heavy rains. He warned of potential flood-related disasters and urged early preparedness to avert loss of life and property.
The Madaraka Day commemorations, held in various counties, served not only as a celebration of Kenya’s self-rule but also as a platform for leaders to reconnect with citizens and address local issues—from security to sustainability and disaster preparedness.
