Parents have been warned not to resolve defilement cases through informal or so-called kangaroo courts, a practice which authorities say is contributing to the increase of teenage pregnancies in the area.
Parents in Gatanga, Murang’a County were warned against resolving defilement cases through informal or so-called kangaroo courts, which authorities say is one of the reasons for the rise of teenage pregnancies in the region.
Speaking at Ithanga/Kakuzi Sub-County Deputy County Commissioner’s grounds, Ahadi Kenya Trust CEO c Sr. Stanley Kamau emphasized the call for families to report defilement cases to the police as they often prefer to handle the situation privately.
He added that the failure to fight for justice through the legal system helps the perpetrators and takes away the rights of the victims.
Dr.Kamau emphasized that many cases go unreported, making it difficult for authorities to address the vice effectively and protect vulnerable children. He called on parents and guardians to prioritize the safety and well-being of minors by ensuring all cases are formally reported and prosecuted.
Area Assistant County Commissioner Ann Wanjiru stated that parents who are found helping the perpetrators in settling such cases out of court will be prosecuted.
She also assured that the government is still very determined to fight against gender-based violence and to protect children from any type of abuse.
The authorities and the child protection agencies leaders called upon the community to be very actively engaged in their work to fight against gender-based violence and the other issues related to the children’s protection and childhood.
