Controversial televangelist Pastor James Ng’ang’a has once again drawn public ire after a video surfaced showing him slapping a church member who had fallen asleep during a service.
In the now-viral clip, Ng’ang’a is seen stepping down from the pulpit and approaching the front row where the man was seated. “Hii Kenya iko na mambo mingi sana, amka!” (“This Kenya has too many problems—wake up!”) he shouts before slapping the man and ordering him to sit at the back of the church.
Visibly agitated, Ng’ang’a then turns to a woman seated beside the man, berating her for not waking him up. “Na wewe kwa nini analala hapa na unamwona?” (“And you, why is he sleeping here while you’re just watching?”) he demands.
The video has sparked a storm of criticism on social media, with many demanding a public apology from the pastor.
Pastor Ng’ang’a is known for his controversial behavior and unfiltered remarks. Recently, he advised his followers against investing in the transport and hospitality industries, citing his own personal losses.
“I have three matatus, and they’re a nightmare. I even sold one for a throwaway price—and it was brand new,” he lamented. “I don’t know what kind of demon this is.”
The preacher has also come under fire for humiliating Milka Moraa, a congregant who sought financial help to clear Sh4,000 in rent arrears. Instead of offering assistance, Ng’ang’a sent her to a police station—a move that angered the public. In response, well-wishers rallied together, raised funds, and even helped Moraa secure a job.
As criticism mounts, calls for accountability and restraint from religious leaders continue to grow.
