Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe will be absent from Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Manchester United after being admitted to hospital.
In an official club statement released on Saturday, Newcastle confirmed that Howe was taken to hospital late Friday evening after feeling unwell for several days.
“The Magpies’ head coach was admitted to hospital late on Friday evening having felt unwell for a number of days,” the statement read. “Medical staff kept Eddie in hospital overnight for further tests, which are ongoing. He is conscious, communicating with his family, and continues to receive expert medical care.”
The club added: “Everyone at Newcastle United extends their best wishes to Eddie for a speedy recovery, and further updates will be provided in due course.”
In Howe’s absence, his assistants Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones will take charge of the team for Sunday’s 4:30pm kickoff at St. James’ Park, live on Sky Sports. Tindall also handled the pre-match press conference in place of Howe.
Howe, who took over from Steve Bruce in November 2021, recently led Newcastle to their first domestic trophy in 70 years with a Carabao Cup triumph over Liverpool at Wembley.
The club currently sits seventh in the Premier League and remains in the race for a Champions League spot.
