The Okundi Dam Irrigation Project in Karachuonyo Constituency is emerging as a major boost to local agriculture, water access, and livelihoods, officials say.
The project, implemented by the State Department for Irrigation, aims to provide a reliable water source for irrigation, domestic use, and livestock, tackling long-standing challenges of water scarcity in the area.
With a storage capacity of approximately 150 million cubic litres, the dam is expected to support year-round irrigation, enhance agricultural productivity, and strengthen resilience to drought and climate change.
Once completed, the project will irrigate about 100 acres, benefiting roughly 100 households and supporting more than 20,000 livestock units.

Infrastructure developments include upstream and downstream dams, check dams, solar-powered pumping systems, piped irrigation networks, storage tanks, and communal water points.
This afternoon, Principal Secretary for Irrigation, CPA Ephantus Kimotho, CBS, inspected the ongoing works at the site.
He was joined by Karachuonyo MP Adipo Okuome, the Deputy County Commissioner, and senior county officials. The inspection highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring irrigation projects deliver tangible benefits to communities.
During a farmers’ sensitization session, PS Kimotho emphasized the importance of preparing beneficiaries for irrigation-based production.
He encouraged the strengthening of farmer organizations and capacity building in crop husbandry, water management, and agribusiness to maximize the benefits of the infrastructure once operational.
Beyond improving water access, the project is expected to increase maize and horticultural production, create employment, raise household incomes, and enhance food and nutrition security in the constituency.
Hon. Adipo Okuome welcomed the initiative, saying it would boost farmers’ resilience to climate change and improve livelihoods.
County Government representative Benard Omwanda also pledged continued support through county extension services to help farmers fully benefit from the project.
