Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) National Executive Council (NEC) has resolved to retain Edwin Sifuna as the party’s Secretary General, ending speculation over his position in the party’s top leadership.

The decision was made during a high-level NEC meeting that also approved changes within the party’s structures, including the removal of Saboti MP Caleb Amisi as Deputy Organising Secretary. Amisi has been replaced by Busia Governor Paul Otuoma in a move seen as part of a broader reorganisation of the party’s leadership ahead of anticipated political realignments.

In further changes, Kipkorir Menjo and Taita Taveta Senator Johnes Mwaruma were removed from the ODM NEC. The party did not immediately provide detailed reasons for their removal, but insiders described the shake-up as a strategic restructuring aimed at strengthening internal cohesion and preparing the party for upcoming political developments.

The NEC also earmarked several senior party figures for key roles moving forward, including Deputy Party Leader Godfrey Osotsi, Siaya Governor James Orengo, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Ruth Odinga. Their positioning is expected to play a significant role in ODM’s next phase of political strategy.

The leadership changes come as ODM prepares to formally withdraw from the Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya Coalition. Party officials indicated that the exit will be effected after the completion of required procedural formalities, marking a major shift in the opposition political landscape.

ODM’s anticipated departure from Azimio signals a potential reconfiguration of alliances as parties begin recalibrating ahead of future electoral cycles. The move is likely to reshape opposition politics and could trigger fresh negotiations among coalition partners.

By retaining Sifuna while simultaneously restructuring other leadership positions, ODM appears to be striking a balance between stability and renewal within its ranks. Political observers say the changes reflect efforts to consolidate the party’s internal structures while positioning it strategically in an evolving political environment.
