National Museums Disown East African Biennale Event

The National Museum of Kenya has since dissociated itself from the forthcoming East African Biennale, the 11th edition, which is set for September 15 – 20, 2026.

In its notice dated Wednesday, NMK alleges that promoters of the event are using the museum’s name and likeness without permission.

“The name and image of The Nairobi National Museum are being incorporated in the promotion of the East African Biennale without the knowledge and approval of the museum,” the statement read.

The East Africa Art Biennale is an art exhibition which takes place every two years and incorporates art from various artists in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi.

This follows a decision by the Cabinet previously to facilitate the country’s hosting of several international events this year. Among these is the International Nuclear Conference 2026, which will take place between March 24th and 26th this year in Mombasa County.

Additionally, the Cabinet approved the country’s hosting of the Eastern and Southern Africa Anti-Money Laundering Group Regional Training Academy. This is because the country will be better placed in the fight against money laundering and financing of terrorism-related offenses.

For the time being, NMK has re-asserted that the Nairobi National Museum is not involved in the East Africa Biennale exhibition.
