Harambee Stars suffered a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to Estonia on Friday night, March 27, after a 1-1 draw in their FIFA Series semi-final clash played in Kigali, Rwanda.
Kenyans had hoped for a strong showing against the European side, but the match ultimately slipped away in the shootout, where a costly miss proved decisive.
Estonia took the lead in the 21st minute through Tanel Tammik before Kenya responded in the second half, with Ryan Ogam finding the equaliser in the 51st minute to bring the game level.
The match, played at Amahoro Stadium, was the first-ever meeting between the two sides, as the FIFA Series provided a platform for teams from different continents to face off.
Kenya, set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, pushed for a winner late in the game but could not break down Estonia’s defence, forcing the contest into penalties.
In the shootout, both sides converted their initial spot-kicks before the decisive moment fell to midfielder Richard Odada.
Odada attempted a panenka – a chipped penalty down the middle- but missed, handing Estonia the advantage as they went on to win the shootout 5-4 and advance to the final.
The result means Kenya will now drop into the third-place playoff, where they will face the loser between Grenada and Rwanda on Monday.
The match also marked a testing outing for Harambee Stars, who were without key players including captain Michael Olunga due to injury, as head coach Benni McCarthy continues to experiment with the squad ahead of upcoming international assignments.
Despite the defeat, the performance offered positives, particularly the team’s response after going behind and their ability to compete against unfamiliar European opposition.
However, the penalty miss and inability to close out the game will raise questions as the team looks to build consistency and composure in crucial moments.
