Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Oburu Oginga has suggested that the party could extend its cooperation with President William Ruto as Kenya approaches the 2027 General Election.
Speaking publicly for the first time since returning from Dubai, Oburu pointed to the recent by-elections, where candidates from both UDA and ODM won all parliamentary seats, as evidence that the two parties can form an ‘unbeatable force’ when working together.
The Siaya senator made the remarks on Saturday during the wedding ceremony of National Intelligence Service Director-General Noordin Haji’s son in Garissa. He praised the joint campaign efforts, saying the results validated the idea of a broad-based political arrangement.
“I want to thank both the UDA and ODM teams for the hard work that delivered victory in the by-elections. We have proved wrong those who doubted the strength of a broad-based team. If the broad-based government doesn’t exist, how then did we win the by-elections?” Oburu said.
While the current political cooperation is officially set to run until 2027, Oburu hinted that ODM might remain aligned with President Ruto even beyond that point. He described recent events as evidence of a unified political bloc that would be difficult to defeat.
“Raila left us in the broad-based government, and we will continue working with the president until the end. We know the term ends in 2027, but from the look of things, you will see how matters align. We are together, and we continue to pray for the president,” Oburu added.
ODM, however, remains divided over its engagement with the Kenya Kwanza administration. Critics within the party insist that ODM has enough political strength to field a strong presidential candidate in 2027 and potentially win without relying on Ruto’s support.
Before his death, Raila Odinga had stated that ODM would remain part of the broad-based government until 2027 but stopped short of endorsing Ruto for a second term.
