The Nyandarua County Government has launched a countywide campaign to promote coffee farming as part of its strategy to diversify the agricultural sector and raise farmers’ incomes.

Governor Kiarie Badilisha explained that the program is intended to provide the farmers with the skills and equipment to move from a heavy reliance on potatoes to the growing of such cash crops as coffee, apples, avocados, and pyrethrum.

He explained that the county’s decision is aimed at achieving sustainable agricultural growth, increasing household incomes, and making Nyandarua a significant player in Kenya’s agribusiness sector.

Governor Badilisha said that through agricultural diversification; the county would be able to attract private investment, encourage value addition in the agriculture value chain and thus, ensure that farmers get better returns for their produce.

The coffee promotion initiative is the first step to the county’s efforts to revitalize the agricultural sector and empower the rural communities through modern, market-driven agricultural ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌practices.
