Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration Kipchuma Murkomen has gazetted the amendments to the Registration of Persons (Amendment) Act, scrapping the KSh 300 fee for identification card registration.

This follows President William Ruto’s directive that Kenyans aged 18 and above be issued ID cards free of charge.

This reversed a previously gazetted fee hike, which had increased the cost of obtaining an ID for first-time applicants from KSh 100 to KSh 300 with replacements costing KSh 1,000.

In the special gazette notice, Murkomen amended the act, substituting the “KSh 300” captured as a fee with “nil”.

"The Sixth Schedule to the Registration of Persons Rules is Sub. leg. amended by deleting the expression "KSh. 300" appearing as fees for the item "Not Previously Registered (NPR)" and substituting therefore the expression "Nil"," read the notice in part.

Speaking in Kibra Constituency during his development tour of Nairobi, President Ruto said the move aims to ensure that as many Kenyans as possible secure identification documents.
