The luxury cruise liner MV Norwegian Dawn, one of the largest cruise ships ever built, arrived at Mombasa Port from Seychelles yesterday, bringing 2,220 tourists.

This visit underscores Kenya’s rising prominence as a cruise destination, following recent visits by the MS Europa and MS World Odyssey, the latter famously known as ‘Semester at Sea’, according to a statement from the Kenya Ports Authority.

Davis Chirchir, Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, praised the arrival as a testament to Kenya’s growing status as a leading tourist destination.

The increasing number of cruise vessel visits is linked to the improved infrastructure at Mombasa Port, including a modern cruise terminal and other strategic developments, which have positioned Kenya as a preferred stop for international liners.

“With a length of 294 meters and a draft of 8.3 meters, Norwegian Dawn is one of the largest vessels ever to dock in Mombasa, bringing over 2,000 tourists, primarily from the United States, to Kenyan shores,” the statement said.

It added, “The enhanced infrastructure, particularly the modern cruise terminal and other developments, has led to a surge in cruise calls at both Mombasa and Lamu ports, positioning Kenya as a key destination for international cruise liners.”

The vessel was guided into port in the early hours by Kenya Ports Authority Managing Director Capt. William Ruto, ensuring a smooth arrival for the luxury liner.

The tourists are expected to visit top attractions, including Fort Jesus, Haller Park, Diani Beach, and Tsavo National Park, providing a valuable boost to the local tourism industry.
