The National Liberal Party (NLP) has raised alarm over what it terms as clandestine power deals within the opposition aimed at influencing the appointment of officials to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Speaking at a press conference, NLP leader Augustus Kyalo Muli accused Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and DAP-K’s Eugene Wamalwa of attempting to pressure President William Ruto into involving them in the allocation of IEBC positions.

He described the alleged scheme as a form of political impunity masked as inclusivity.“This is nothing short of political blackmail disguised as constitutional consultation,” Muli stated. “We shall not sit back and watch as certain leaders arm-twist the presidency for partisan gain.”The NLP has warned that it will challenge any such arrangement in court, vowing to initiate legal proceedings should President Ruto concede to the opposition’s demands.

Muli insisted that the independence of the IEBC must be safeguarded and urged the president to resist political pressure that could compromise the integrity of the electoral body.“The IEBC belongs to the people of Kenya, not political elites seeking to secure future election outcomes,” he added.

The party’s remarks come amid ongoing public debate on the reconstitution of the IEBC, which has faced delays and controversy following the exit of previous commissioners.
