A meeting between Murang’a governor Irungu Kang’ata and a section of UDA and ODM Members of Parliament has raised eyebrows, majorly due to its timing.
It is in the public domain that Kang’ata is one of the leaders from the Mt Kenya region being considered to take over from Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua should the Senate uphold his impeachment.
Among the MPs who attended the meeting was South Mugirango’s Silvanus Osoro, who highly talked about Kang’ata’s quick political success, rising ranks from a counselor to a governor.
"Governor Irungu Kang’ata has risen through the ranks so occasionally we usually have such kind of meetings with progressive leaders to share with us their experience with leadership," said Osoro.
On his part, Kang’ata said he only met the MPs to greet them before laughing out loud. He tried to downplay the importance of the meeting or what was discussed, but there is more than what meets the eye.
It is worth noting that Kang’ata is a close ally of President William Ruto. He was among Ruto’s allies who publicly opposed the BBI that was fronted by then-president Uhuru Kenyatta.
Other leaders named to take over from Gachagua should he be impeached are Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, PCS Musalia Mudavadi, MPs Ndindi Nyoro and Kimani Ichung’wah and governors Anne Waiguru and Gladys Wanga.
