The national women’s boxing team, the Hit-Squad, has arrived in Serbia for the 14th edition of the World Boxing Championship, which began on Saturday and will run until March 16.

The team is captained by Elizabeth Andiego, who is competing in her fifth World Championship.

Andiego, a light heavyweight boxer, is joined by seven other talented athletes: Veronica Mbithe (light flyweight), Lancer Akinyi (flyweight), Amina Martha (bantamweight), Pauline Chege (featherweight), Emily Juma (lightweight), Cynthia Mwai (light welter), and Friza Anyango (welter).

Amina Martha, one of the squad’s most experienced members, is eager to improve on her previous performances, as this marks her third championship appearance.

Emily Juma, a product of the Kariobangi North Box Girls program, will make her international debut alongside debutants Cynthia Mwai and Lancer Akinyi.

Head coach Benjamin Musa remains optimistic about the team’s chances, despite facing challenges with their preparation.

“We’re entering the competition with high hopes. Although it’s been tough without a proper residential training camp, we have faith in our fighters. If the draw works in our favor and our debutants rise to the occasion, we believe we can cause some major upsets. The ring is where champions are made, and we are ready to fight,” said Coach Musa.

This marks Kenya’s fifth appearance at the World Championship, having participated in the 2010, 2012, 2022, and 2023 editions.

The Championship has attracted 500 boxers from over 40 countries. Gold medalists will receive $100,000 USD, while silver medalists will earn $50,000.

Each bronze medalist will receive $25,000, and for the first time in the tournament’s history, all quarter-finalists will receive $10,000.
