In a powerful demonstration of her commitment to women’s empowerment, Kwale County Governor Fatuma Achani has awarded Ksh 50 million worth of tenders to 42 women’s groups in the county. This initiative, announced during the International Women’s Day celebrations, is aimed at promoting gender equality and encouraging women’s economic independence.

The 2025 theme for International Women’s Day, “Accelerating Action for Gender Equality,” aligns with the steps Governor Achani has taken to support women’s groups across Kwale. She has been actively encouraging these groups to transform into limited companies, which will allow them to access business opportunities both within the government and the private sector.

Since Governor Achani took office in August 2022, more than 200 women’s groups have successfully converted to limited companies. Out of these, 100 women-led enterprises have been awarded tenders from the Kwale County Government, contributing to the county’s growing focus on empowering women entrepreneurs.

Speaking at the International Women’s Day event held at Kinango Baraza Park, Governor Achani highlighted how empowering women directly impacts the well-being of the entire community. “By strengthening women’s capacity, we strengthen our society,” she stated, encouraging both women and youth to continue formalizing their groups to unlock financial opportunities.

Kwale Deputy Governor Chirema Kombo and Kwale Women Representative Fatuma Masito also addressed the gathering, urging women to follow Governor Achani’s lead in advocating for women’s rights and leadership. They called on women to participate more actively in the political process and seek elective positions in the upcoming elections to bridge the gap in women’s representation in leadership roles within the county.

One of the tender beneficiaries, Meswalehe Abdallah of the Kudzecha Women’s Group, expressed her gratitude for the life-changing opportunities created by Governor Achani’s administration. “We are grateful because our financial situation has greatly improved, and we always receive our payments on time once we complete our tasks,” Meswalehe shared.

The tenders awarded to the 42 women’s groups cover various essential services, including cleaning contracts for Kwale municipalities such as Diani, Lunga Lunga, Kwale Town, and Kinango, as well as construction projects for the county. Among the groups that received tenders are Yawezekana Ventures, Chongomundu Suppliers, Sambamba Malungoni, Tuko Mbele Investment, Dzimanya Enterprise, and Chigato Visionary.

Governor Achani’s continued efforts to empower women’s groups in Kwale County reflect her dedication to creating a more inclusive and economically empowered community, underscoring the importance of women’s involvement in both the economy and leadership.
