The Nairobi City County Government has issued a stern directive reshaping hawking activities within the Central Business District (CBD).
Effective immediately, hawking will only be permitted on designated backstreets and lanes from 4 PM to 10 PM, Monday through Saturday.

The approved hawking zone stretches from Tom Mboya Street to Kirinyaga Road.
Main streets such as Moi Avenue, Haile Selassie Avenue, Kenneth Matiba Road, and others remain strictly off-limits for trading activities.
Additionally, walkways within the CBD are now reserved exclusively for pedestrians.
This move aims to restore order and enhance pedestrian safety in the city. Violators of these new regulations face prosecution under Nairobi City County by-laws.
“We’re committed to making Nairobi work,” stated Acting County Secretary Godfrey Akumali in the notice.
