Nairobi City Thunder beat MBB 85-76 at BK Arena in Kigali.

Albert Odero spearheaded a landmark triumph for the Nairobi City Thunder on Saturday afternoon, as the Kenyan side recorded a thrilling 85-76 win over MBB at BK Arena in Kigali during the fifth round of the Basketball Africa League (BAL) Nile Conference.

Odero delivered a standout performance, racking up 25 points, nine rebounds, and four assists to power the Thunder past the same MBB team that edged them 75-74 in their previous meeting, thanks to a last-gasp three-pointer from Robinson Opong.

This time, however, Thunder left little to chance — limiting turnovers, shooting efficiently, and tightening up defensively to control much of the contest.

The victory marks another chapter in Thunder’s fairytale run as they continue to break ground as the first-ever Kenyan team to compete in the BAL, a league created to showcase Africa’s elite basketball talent.

Despite the win, Thunder remains at the bottom of the Nile Conference standings, with a 1-2 record compared to MBB’s two wins. Their playoff hopes — with spots up for grabs for the June 6–14 stage in Pretoria, South Africa — remain in delicate balance.

Coach Brad Ibs fielded an all-Kenyan starting lineup that displayed remarkable chemistry and execution.

Point guard Eugene Adera emerged as the unsung hero, registering a double-double and coming through with key rebounds and clutch scoring. He was one of five Thunder players to score in double figures, joining Odero, Tylor Ongwae, Uchenna Iroegbu, and Yohanne Kabongo.

On the other side, MBB’s Teafale Lenard Jr put on an individual masterclass, finishing with a game-high 39 points. His offensive arsenal — from explosive dunks to deep threes — was on full display, as was his defensive prowess. Lenard came within three points of the league scoring record (42), held by Jo Lual-Acuil of Al Ahli Tripoli.

While Thunder’s playoff fate remains uncertain, Saturday’s win served as a statement — both of belief and potential — from a team rewriting Kenyan basketball history on the continental stage.
