Senior Government officials led by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen have arrived at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, following the tragic dormitory fire that has left at least 15 students feared dead.
The delegation is expected to assess the situation on the ground, receive updates from emergency response teams and investigators, and offer support to affected families as rescue and recovery operations continue at the school.
According to police, the fire broke out at around 1 a.m. on Thursday morning but was reported at approximately 3:30 a.m., prompting a swift response from emergency teams including the Kenya Red Cross.
Several students sustained injuries during the incident and were rushed to St. Joseph’s Hospital and other medical facilities for treatment.
Rift Valley Regional Police Commander Samuel Ndanyi said authorities were still working to account for all students, with reports indicating that several learners remained unaccounted for by Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, grief-stricken parents flocked to the school compound as news of the tragedy spread across Gilgil and neighbouring areas, with security officers restricting access to allow ongoing investigations and emergency operations.
Authorities have since launched investigations into the cause of the deadly blaze.
