Attorney General Dorcas Oduor has mourned the victims of the deadly dormitory fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, describing the incident as a heartbreaking tragedy that has shaken the nation.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Attorney General expressed deep sorrow following the fire outbreak that claimed the lives of several students and left others nursing injuries.

She conveyed condolences to the bereaved families, the school community, teachers, staff and students affected by the incident, while wishing those injured a quick recovery as they continue receiving medical attention.

“This heartbreaking tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the need to strengthen safety measures, preparedness, and emergency response systems within our learning institutions to safeguard the wellbeing and future of our children,”she said in a statement.

Preliminary reports indicate that the fire broke out in one of the school dormitories during the early hours of Thursday morning, prompting emergency response efforts from firefighters, security officers, medical personnel and humanitarian agencies.

The Attorney General said the tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the need to strengthen safety measures, preparedness and emergency response systems in learning institutions across the country.

She also commended emergency teams for their swift response and continued support during rescue and recovery operations at the school.
