NMG journalist Rukia Bulle has been recognized by TikTok as one of the top content creators in its 2024 annual wrap-up, earning a spot among those breaking barriers and amplifying voices. Bulle was ranked among the emerging transformative creators reshaping Kenya’s and East Africa’s cultural, social, and economic landscape through their impactful content.

Currently on a three-month secondment with the BBC in London, Bulle made the list thanks to her TikTok channel, which offers an inside look at the world of journalism. Through her engaging storytelling, she demystifies the news reporting process and shows her followers the effort that goes into creating compelling stories from the ground up. Her account, which has garnered over 116,000 followers, continues to grow in popularity.

In August, Bulle was also named the 2024 winner of the prestigious BBC Komla Dumor Award, becoming the third Kenyan to receive the honor since its inception in 2015. The award, created in memory of the late BBC journalist Komla Dumor, offers winners a three-month placement with the BBC News team in London, where Bulle will gain valuable experience and mentorship across TV, radio, and online platforms.

Bulle’s TikTok channel stands out for providing followers with behind-the-scenes insights into the field of journalism, a niche that has captivated many. Alongside her, former national rugby sevens player-turned-chef Dennis Ombachi, also known as ‘The Roaming Chef,’ earned a spot on the list for his inspiring culinary content and candid discussions about mental health. Ombachi is part of TikTok’s Global Change Makers program and works with Mtoto News, a Kenyan organization amplifying youth voices.

Tech influencer Roy Kanyi also made the list for his efforts to simplify the tech world for everyday users through gadget reviews. Educator Priscilla Wanjiru Karanja earned recognition for her innovative approach to teaching, using popular songs and dances to engage primary school students in math.

Mental health advocate Dr. Ann Mwongela was also named among the top content creators, providing valuable mental health advice and creating a safe space for open discussions on mental wellness. Lastly, Hezron Asewe earned recognition for bringing Kenyan culture and language to the forefront, teaching audiences about local traditions in a fun and accessible way.
