Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has extended the fee waiver for replacing national ID cards, giving Kenyans more time to update their documents without paying.
In a special gazette notice dated April 30, Murkomen announced that the waiver will now run until October 30, 2026. The extension comes after an earlier deadline that had been set to end in April.
This means that Kenyans who have lost their ID cards or need to update information on them will not pay the standard KSh1,000 fee within the coming six months.
According to Murkomen, this is because such a move allows for easier accessibility to identification documents by Kenyans during daily operations.
Identification cards are very important when searching for employment opportunities and when accessing various financial services offered by the government.
“We aim to ensure that every citizen in Kenya is able to obtain important documents of identification,” he emphasized.
Thus, the temporary abolition of fees is one of the measures that have been adopted by the new government in order to ensure easier access to vital documents by Kenyans.
Recently, the administration of President William Ruto abolished fees for the issuance of national IDs among other similar steps.
Murkomen urged citizens who require their identification documents to be renewed to use this opportunity.
Given the anticipated increase in applicants, the government is expected to introduce improvements in the process of registration.
