The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has provided a significant update on the ongoing investigation into the tragic shooting of Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were, following a detailed autopsy and the arraignment of key suspects.

According to an official statement released today, the autopsy was conducted at Lee Funeral Home by Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor. The procedure, which was attended by top homicide detectives, forensic experts from the DCI’s National Forensics Laboratory, family representatives, legal counsel, and members of parliament, confirmed that Hon. Were sustained five gunshot wounds, all entering from the left side of his body.

Two bullets were recovered from the body during the autopsy, complementing a third bullet previously retrieved from the deceased’s vehicle. These findings are expected to play a crucial role in piecing together the events leading up to the assassination.

Investigators have already gathered several key pieces of evidence, including surveillance footage, the identification of a getaway vehicle, financial proceeds, and links between the suspects and the victim. These exhibits are considered vital to unravelling the motive and sequence of events surrounding the killing.

On May 5, four suspects connected to the case were arraigned at the JKIA Court, where detectives secured a 30-day custodial order to allow for further investigations. The case will be mentioned again on June 5, 2025.

Meanwhile, DCI officials confirmed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend additional suspects believed to be involved in the “heinous act.” Specialised homicide and forensic units continue to work tirelessly to establish a clear picture of the motive and all parties involved.

The DCI has appealed to the public for any information that might assist in the investigation. Citizens are urged to report tips to the nearest police station or use the following toll-free numbers: 999, 112, or #FichuaKwaDCI (0800 722 203).

“The DCI remains committed to conducting a thorough and transparent investigation,” the statement read. “We will keep the public informed as more details emerge.”
