The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has cautioned motorists to brace for major traffic disruptions along the busy corridor linking Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to James Gichuru as large-scale road expansion works get underway.

In a statement issued on Thursday, January 15, KeNHA confirmed that construction had officially begun on the 27-kilometre stretch connecting JKIA to ABC Place in Westlands. The project is part of a broader plan to improve road safety, ease congestion and enhance the overall appearance of the highway.

According to the Authority, the works will involve widening sections of the road to increase capacity, as well as landscaping and beautification efforts along the corridor.

“Works on capacity enhancement, landscaping and beautification along the James Gichuru–JKIA (A8/B10) Highway are ongoing in earnest,” KeNHA said.

Photos shared by the Authority show engineers and contractors already on site, with excavators and tipper trucks carrying out excavation works, while inspection and survey teams oversee progress to ensure the project adheres to approved designs and safety standards.

With construction now in full swing, KeNHA has urged motorists using the affected route to plan their journeys carefully, remain patient and strictly follow traffic instructions.

“Motorists plying the affected route are advised to exercise caution, observe all traffic signage and maintain low speeds within the project corridor,” the Authority noted, adding that it regrets the inconvenience caused but appealed for cooperation to allow the works to be completed safely and on time.

The roadworks follow a notice issued earlier this week directing the removal of all roadside developments along the corridor. In the notice dated January 13, KeNHA ordered owners of billboards, tree nursery beds and temporary structures within the road reserve to clear them within 14 days to pave the way for the project.

The Authority warned that any structures not removed within the stipulated period would be demolished without further notice, as the government pushes ahead with the long-awaited upgrade of one of Nairobi’s busiest transport links.
