Jose Mourinho has been sacked by Fenerbahce just over a year after taking charge, with his dismissal coming two days after the club was knocked out of the Champions League play-offs by Benfica.

In a brief statement, the Turkish club announced that Mourinho had “parted ways” with them.

The Portuguese manager, who has coached major clubs including Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham, led Fenerbahce to a second-place league finish in his only season. However, his tenure was marred by controversy.

In February, Turkish champions Galatasaray accused Mourinho of making racist remarks following a goalless draw and vowed to pursue criminal charges.

Mourinho denied the allegations, calling himself the “opposite” of racist, and responded with a lawsuit seeking 1,907,000 Turkish Lira (£41,000) in damages.

Mourinho joined Fenerbahce after a three-year stint at Roma, where he won the UEFA Conference League in 2022 — the club’s first European trophy.

The 61-year-old boasts an illustrious career, having won Champions League titles with Porto and Inter Milan, three Premier League titles with Chelsea, and the Europa League with Manchester United in 2017 — their most recent European success.
