Morocco's Captain Achraf Hakimi

Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi has been accused of rape, French prosecutors have confirmed.

Hakimi, defender for Paris Saint- Germain (PSG) and captain of Morocco’s national team, helped the Atlas Lions to a historic semi-final run at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar making  the first African team ever to reach the stage.

In 2023, a woman accused Hakimi of raping her at his home in the French capital when she was 24 years old. An investigating judge ordered a trial in February 2026, and Hakimi appealed the trial to be dismissed.

“The justice system looked me in the eye and said, if you weren’t famous, there would never have been a case. I chose to remain silent for years. I believed that maintaining my dignity, being patient and trusting in the justice system would allow the right decisions to be made,” Hakimi wrote on his social media.

He has won 97 caps for Morocco making his international debut in 2016 at the age of 17. He has also won 13 pieces of silverware with PSG, including the Champions League titles in the past two seasons.

Hakimi has denied the accusations; he is expected to lead Morocco at the World Cup fixture against Scotland on Saturday morning (01:00 EST).
