Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) Nairobi branch chairperson Moses Mbuthia, who is also vying for the treasurer position in the upcoming National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) elections, has called for greater fairness and accountability within sports federations and the media.
Speaking in Nairobi on Monday, Mbuthia — who also serves as the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Secretary for the Nairobi region — criticized the recycling of leadership within sports organizations, warning that it hinders progress and sustainability.
“We’ve turned our sports federations into recycling bins, and sadly, the media has been complicit in promoting this culture,” he said.
Adding “My aim is to mentor the next generation of leaders, because the reality is none of us will hold these positions forever. If we don’t prepare our successors, the future of Kenyan sports will be in jeopardy.”
With over 20 years of experience in sports administration, Mbuthia also challenged the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) to hold federations accountable and resist compromised collaborations.
“It’s not necessarily wrong to work with federations, but some of these partnerships come with strings attached. They offer minor incentives to keep journalists quiet when things go wrong. That compromises integrity. Without bold, independent journalism, malpractice will thrive, and the quality of sports in Kenya will continue to decline,” he stated.
The NOCK elections, initially slated for April 24, were postponed following a High Court ruling that disqualified four disputed federations from participating.
The new date is yet to be announced. The delay, however, provides Mbuthia additional time to promote his platform of transparency, equity, and inclusivity in the management of sports in Kenya.
