Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho on Friday hosted community leaders from West Pokot at his Nairobi office to discuss challenges in the region’s mining sector.

The meeting focused on the rising problem of illegal mining, which has caused water pollution and loss of vegetation, threatening both the environment and local livelihoods.

Joho assured the leaders that the ministry is committed to enforcing the Mining Act and shutting down operations that damage the land.

“We want mining to benefit communities, not harm them,” he said.

He emphasized the importance of working together with local communities to promote sustainable and responsible mining that protects the environment while supporting economic growth.

Joho was joined by Mining Principal Secretary Harry Kimtai.
