A series of another victories in the campaign for retrieving illegal firearms have been reported after additional weapons surrendered voluntarily in Elgeyo Marakwet and Tana River Counties. In Elgeyo Marakwet, the latest collection by the NPS has resulted in the total of illicit firearms handed over in the county standing at 357 with 2342 rounds of ammunition.

In the neighbouring Tana River County, members of the community surrendered two illegally possessed AK, 47 rifle and a total of 10 rounds of 7. 62mm ammunition.

According to the police every gun taken off the street is eliminating or stopping a potential crime of all kinds, including armed robberies, stock theft, retribution shooting and other acts of violence that endangers life and the safety of the citizens.

Using security operations and intelligence led policing and enhanced cooperation by the public to credit to the gains achieved as citizens continue to hand in illegal firearms and provide useful information.

The Service commended communities for “kicking-off the disarmament initiative”, adding that Partnership “shows how peace in the community can be achieved through mutual trust, shared responsibility and respect for the rule of law” instead of owning illegal guns.

Police reiterated their commitment to the continuing national disarmament campaign through Intelligence-led operations, strategic collaborations and community, based initiatives to eradicate illicit firearms throughout the country.
