Mombasa United were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against a determined Muhoroni Youth in a National Super League (NSL) encounter at Serani Grounds in Mombasa yesterday.
Muhoroni Youth broke the deadlock in the 12th minute when Mark Otieno fired in a low shot from inside the box after Mombasa United’s defense failed to clear the ball, beating goalkeeper Kevin Tila.
But just 30 seconds into the second half, United equalized through Answar Shamuni, who pounced on a defensive mix-up in the Muhoroni Youth backline following a powerful corner from Wilberforce Lugogo.
Mombasa United pushed hard for a winner in the second half, but they wasted several chances and were forced to accept a share of the spoils at home.
Mombasa United head coach Hamadi Said expressed satisfaction with the point, despite aiming for all three.
“It was a game of two halves,” Said said. “Muhoroni Youth dominated the first half with their long balls, and we conceded. In the second half, we were more positive and created many chances, but overall, I think it was a good game for us.”
Muhoroni Youth head coach Ibrahim Anjiri lauded his team’s resilience. “We’re grateful for the draw and will use it as a stepping stone going forward,” Anjiri said. “We’re undergoing technical changes, and we believe they will have a positive impact.”
Mombasa United remain 15th in the NSL standings with 20 points, while Muhoroni Youth stay in the relegation zone in 18th place with 13 points.
