The Ministry of Health will implement “robust workplace mental wellness programs” for healthcare workers nationwide, announced Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa, following the tragic suicide of a medical intern at Gatundu Level 5 Hospital in Kiambu County on Sunday.
Desree Moraa Obwogi, whose body was found in a shared residence near the hospital, left a suicide note highlighting challenges in her work environment. CS Barasa noted that Dr. Obwogi’s death underscores the silent struggles faced by healthcare professionals.
The wellness programs aim to strengthen support systems and ensure those in distress feel less isolated.Barasa expressed condolences to Dr. Obwogi’s family, friends, and colleagues, emphasizing the need to tackle the mental health crisis in the country.
“On behalf of the Ministry of Health, I extend our deepest condolences to Dr Moraa’s family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. This tragedy calls upon us to renew our commitment to addressing the growing mental health burden in our country,” said the health minister.
Having worked at Gatundu Level 5 Hospital for just four weeks after transferring from Nakuru Level 5, Dr. Obwogi was last seen after a grueling 36-hour shift.
Her death has intensified calls for improved working conditions for medical interns, as highlighted by the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU).
KMPDU Secretary-General Davji Atellah pointed out ongoing issues such as long hours, inadequate pay, and lack of comprehensive medical coverage, which have been exacerbated by recent strikes for better conditions.
