Missing Worker's Body Discovered Dead at Talanta Sports Stadium in Nairobi

The body of a missing construction worker was discovered at the Talanta Sports Stadium, casting a gloom over the works underway there.

The worker, 35-year-old Sammy Kyengo, was reported missing on September 6 by his wife, Christine. His body was found floating in a water sump at the rear end of the stadium terraces that are under construction.

A co-worker who had arrived to prepare the site for plastering at around 9 a.m. spotted the body.

The police officers who were present verified that Kyengo had suffered visible injuries at the back of his head and on his neck, and there was blood trickling from his nose and mouth. His phone was also switched off since the day he disappeared.

Christine claimed her husband had been complaining about unpaid salary before he vanished. “He complained that the company had not paid them since July. He had to collect his money and quit the job,” she told journalists.

The discovery has unsettled workers at the complex. “We are shocked and scared. If one among us can go missing and later be found dead in the stadium, who is safe here?” asked Ivan Bongo, a worker.

The family members described Kyengo as a calm man with no known disputes. His nephew, Paul Kioko, spoke about how the death had left him uncertain about his future. “He has been paying my school fees and rent. I don’t know how I’ll manage now,” he said.

Scene-of-crime detectives processed the scene before the body was moved to the Nairobi Funeral Home. A post-mortem is expected to establish the cause of death.

Meanwhile, workers were directed not to report to the site on Saturday as investigations continued.
