The government has included mental illness in the Social Health Insurance Fund to support individuals struggling with mental health conditions. This move comes in response to growing concerns over the rising cases of suicide among the youth in the country.

Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni made the announcement while speaking in Kirinyaga, where she emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing mental health challenges. She revealed that plans are underway to establish cessation centers to assist those battling addiction and depression.“The government is in the process of setting up cessation centers to cater for those struggling with addiction and depression,” Muthoni stated.

She urged Kenyans to support individuals facing mental health challenges rather than stigmatizing them, noting that mental illness should be treated like any other medical condition requiring professional care.

Muthoni also highlighted the importance of community awareness and training in tackling substance abuse and promoting mental well-being.“This training is an opportunity to equip our communities with the knowledge and tools needed to prevent substance abuse and promote healthier lifestyles,” she said.

She further assured that the Social Health Authority will provide information on the available benefits for individuals with mental health conditions and those recovering from drug and substance abuse.“Together, we can create a drug-free future for the country. I look forward to engaging with all of you in this important conversation,” she added.

The inclusion of mental health services in the Social Health Insurance Fund is expected to enhance access to affordable care, reduce stigma, and provide critical support to individuals affected by mental health conditions across Kenya.
