The government has directed all cargo entering and leaving the country must undergo mandatory screening at the country’s entry and exit ports.
The Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (KNRA) issued the guidelines to enhance safety measures, prevent illegal entry of radioactive materials, protect its citizens, the environment and trade routes from harmful exposure.
“All legitimate radioactive sources must be accompanied by valid KNRA Import License. Accurate documentation, including the correct Harmonised System (HS) codes, is required,” the notice issued to importers, exporters and licensed cargo agents KNRA said.
KNRA says the new protocol ensures regulation of safe, secure and peaceful utilization of atomic energy and nuclear technology.
The agency is also mandated to monitor the production and use of radiation sources and radioactive waste management. Similar measures have been put in place in South Africa and recently, Tanzania.
According to KNRA, the screening will be carried out at the Port of Mombasa, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Inland Container Depots (ICD) in Nairobi and Naivasha.
All truck drivers and terminal operators must follow the new regulations to avoid trespassing security checkpoints and reduce security risks.
The new law will take effect on May 1, 2026.
