The Military Wives Association of Kenya has made an appeal for ramping up of awareness, inclusion, and support for people living with autism especially within the military communities.
Speaking at the Mtongwe navy base in likoni constituency, Mombasa County where the world autism day was marked with this years theme, “Autism and humanity-every life has value”, the MWAK chairperson Grace Kahariri disclosed that Mtongwe base will open a classroom and a therapy room where the children with autism spectrum will benefit.
Dr. Norman Kiogora, the Director of Kenya Institute of Special Education echied the same sentiments, calling on parents to ensure they have their children assessed earlier to identify their disabilities and have them assisted accordingly and timely.
According to Kiogora, the provision of tailored learning and therapy sessions, who are on the spectrum, will be able to achieve their maximum potential.
“These establishments will enable students with autism in the military community get the necessary assistance and education, ” said Dr Kiogora
