Former Chief Justice David Maraga has sharply criticized President William Ruto over recent comments on enforced disappearances in Kenya, terming the Head of State’s remarks as insensitive and out of touch with the reality faced by affected families.

Speaking during a Monday press briefing alongside visiting Finnish President Alexander Stubb, President Ruto had declared that “all the people who disappeared or were abducted have been brought back to their families.” He further asserted that he had issued firm instructions to security agencies to prevent such incidents in future.

However, the former CJ was quick to dismiss the President’s remarks, stating they trivialized the pain of families still seeking justice and closure.

“It is unconscionable to hear the President claim, without any apology to the victims, parents, and families, that there are no ongoing incidents of enforced disappearances and extra-judicial killings,” Maraga said.

He cited the case of Brian Odhiambo, who has been missing for over four months, as evidence that the problem is far from resolved.
