The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has waived Sh158 billion in penalties, fines, and interest for 2.9 million taxpayers under its ongoing Tax Amnesty Programme, launched in December 2023.

According to a statement from KRA, the initiative — which runs until June 30, 2025 — has already yielded Sh10.9 billion in principal tax payments from beneficiaries seeking to regularize their tax records.

“This initiative is part of KRA’s broader efforts to foster voluntary compliance and provide relief to taxpayers burdened by past debts,” read the statement.

The amnesty applies to tax debts accrued up to December 31, 2023, and is aimed at giving Kenyans a fresh start by clearing penalties and interest, allowing them to “move forward on a clean slate.”

However, the KRA clarified that tax liabilities arising from January 1, 2024, are not covered by the program. Taxpayers with ongoing disputes have been encouraged to pursue resolution through the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanism to benefit from the amnesty within the set timeline.

“KRA encourages all taxpayers to act promptly and take advantage of the tax amnesty before the 30th June 2025 deadline,” the tax agency urged.
