The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has issued a warning to traders in the Coast region, particularly in Kwale and Mombasa counties, over a rising number of scammers impersonating its officials.

Speaking during a sensitization workshop on KEBS services held in Kilifi, KEBS Sales Director Peter Makan revealed that numerous complaints have been received from traders who have fallen victim to imposters claiming to be KEBS officers. These scammers reportedly harass business owners, demanding money or issuing fake warnings.

Makan urged traders to be vigilant and verify the identity of anyone claiming to represent the standards agency. “Ensure you confirm that the person visiting your premises is a genuine KEBS officer by checking their work identification,” he stated.

He also called on traders to report any suspicious individuals to the nearest police station for legal action to be taken against them.

In addition, Makan advised the public to always check for the KEBS logo on products to avoid purchasing counterfeit goods, which pose serious health and safety risks.

KEBS continues to conduct awareness campaigns across the country to promote compliance with standards and protect consumers from substandard and fake products
