Rironi-Nakuru-Mau Summit

Heavy construction is progressing on the long-awaited Rironi-Nakuru-Mau Summit Highway as the government steps up efforts to ease traffic congestion and improve transport along one of Kenya’s busiest road corridors.

In an update shared on his social media pages, Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo said contractors are actively working on multiple sections of the highway following the project’s official launch by President William Ruto in November 2025.

The ongoing works include earthworks, road widening, drainage improvements and other related activities aimed at transforming the busy A8 corridor into a modern multi-lane dual carriageway.

According to Omollo, the project stretches 175 kilometres from Rironi through Naivasha and Nakuru to Mau Summit. It also includes the rehabilitation of the 62-kilometre Rironi-Mai Mahiu-Naivasha Escarpment Road.

“Heavy construction works are in full swing along the Rironi-Nakuru-Mau Summit Highway (A8) as the Government advances one of Kenya’s most transformative road infrastructure projects,” Omollo said.

Once completed, the upgraded highway will feature grade-separated interchanges, overpasses, underpasses, dedicated truck lanes, pedestrian footbridges and intelligent transport systems aimed at improving traffic flow, enhancing road safety and reducing transport and logistics costs.

The Rironi-Nakuru-Mau Summit Highway forms part of the Northern Corridor, one of East Africa’s most important transport routes linking the Port of Mombasa and Nairobi with Western Kenya and neighbouring countries. The expansion is expected to significantly ease chronic traffic jams that have affected motorists and freight transport along the route for years.

Omollo added that the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is supporting the implementation of the project through coordinated road safety campaigns, protection of critical infrastructure and engagement with communities and other stakeholders.

The government says the initiative will not only improve mobility but also strengthen regional trade by providing a safer, faster and more efficient transport corridor for motorists, businesses and local communities.
