Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has revealed plans to vie for the Kisii gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election.

During a radio interview on Tuesday, July 15, the senator confirmed speculations, setting the stage for a likely clash with Governor Simba Arati.

"Seriously, I'll now tell you the truth, I am running for Kisii County governor in 2027. Count on it," said Onyonka.

Despite his political ambition, Onyonka assured citizens that he remains dedicated to his current oversight position, promising to keep the county government in line throughout his tenure.

"I know it is a delicate balancing act. I must behave responsibly without looking petty while overseeing the county, because I still have two years to do that," he said.

The senator added that he would continue to question and critique projects and leadership, including the governor and Members of the County Assembly, saying, “That is my job, and I will do it without fear or favour.”

Onyonka, a long-time political figure and supporter of former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i’s 2027 presidential ambitions, becomes the latest entrant in what is shaping up to be a competitive race. Others said to be eyeing the seat include former Education CS Ezekiel Machogu and Enock Ondari.

While Onyonka was elected senator on an ODM ticket, it remains unclear whether he will stick with the party in his gubernatorial bid especially given the growing cooperation between ODM and the ruling party Kenya Kwanza coalition.

Governor Arati, a former Dagoretti North MP and also an ODM member, is currently serving his first term and enjoys significant grassroots support in the county, praised for his populist style and assertive leadership.
