Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has announced that the government is upgrading the Garissa Airstrip at a cost of KSh 710 million to enhance transport connectivity and boost trade in Northern Kenya.
Speaking in Garissa Township Constituency on Monday, October 6, 2025, Kindiki said the project is a joint effort between the national government and the County Government of Garissa, which has contributed KSh 110 million towards the construction.
The Deputy President, who inspected the ongoing works, commended the contractor for being ahead of schedule and urged for high-quality workmanship and timely completion of the project by December 2025.
“The upgrade of the Garissa Airstrip will significantly improve access to the region, promote commerce, and attract new investments,” Kindiki said.
He emphasized that improved air transport infrastructure is key to unlocking Northern Kenya’s economic potential, supporting local businesses, and connecting the region to major trade routes.
Kindiki was accompanied by Cabinet Secretary for Health Aden Duale, Garissa Township MP Major Dekow Barrow, and other local leaders who lauded the government’s continued investment in infrastructure development across the region.
